Gas Station & Convenience Store Signs

Post the price drivers shop by, then sell what is inside the store.

The short answer

Gas station signs have one main job: show fuel prices clearly enough that a driver can compare and turn in safely. State law often sets how prices are posted, including taxes and cash or credit pricing. Convenience store signs then carry the store name, hours and in-store offers, often on an LED message center.

Quick answers

Common questions.

Do gas station signs have to include taxes in the price?

In many states, yes. California requires the total price per gallon including all taxes, and Maryland requires the total of the price and all taxes in numerals of uniform size. Other states set their own rules, so check with your state weights and measures office before you order price panels.

How big do the numbers on a gas price sign need to be?

State minimums vary: at least six inches in California, and at least 8 inches high by 3.5 inches wide in Maryland. Legibility is a separate question. By the USSC rule of thumb of 30 feet per inch of letter height, an 8-inch numeral reads at about 240 feet, which is short on a fast road.

Can a gas station have an LED price sign where digital signs are restricted?

Often, because many codes treat fuel price displays separately. Belmont, California allows changeable copy on fuel price signs up to a share of the sign area, and Woodland Park, Colorado allows electronic fuel price signs that change only when the price changes. Florida law also limits local rules that make price signs hard to read.

Can I show both cash and credit prices on one sign?

Yes, and some states require it. Maryland requires the credit and debit price of regular gasoline when it is higher than cash, or both prices. California requires each higher price for the same grade in numerals of equal size. Plan the extra rows or columns before the cabinet is designed.

What do convenience store signs cost?

National guides put outdoor LED and digital signs at $750 to $30,000, and pylon and pole signs at $20,000 to $100,000 for most sizes. These are third-party estimates, not Suntronix pricing. Suntronix prices each custom project around the site, and financing may be available for qualifying projects.

Do I need the fuel brand's approval to change my sign?

For brand elements, usually. Branded retailers pay a surcharge for the use of the brand and its benefits, and the brand's image standards govern how it appears. Your store name, message center and building signs may have more room. Read your supply agreement and ask the brand before you order.
