Cabinet Signs

A lighted box with a replaceable face that can mount on a wall, a pole, a pylon or a monument.

The short answer

A cabinet sign is a metal box with lights inside and a translucent or routed face, also called a sign cabinet or light box sign. It can hang on a wall, sit on a pole or pylon, or set into a monument base. HomeAdvisor's national guide puts outdoor lighted signs at about $500 to $5,000.

Quick answers

Common questions.

What is the difference between a cabinet sign and channel letters?

A cabinet sign holds all the copy on one face inside one lighted box. Channel letters are built and lit one letter at a time and mounted individually. A cabinet is simple to update with a new face, but some design-review districts prefer individual letters; Portsmouth, Rhode Island, for example, discourages cabinet signs.

Is a light box sign the same as a cabinet sign?

Yes. Light box, sign cabinet, can sign and lighted cabinet sign are common names for the same thing: a metal box with a light source inside and a removable face. The codes quoted on this page use the term cabinet sign, so use it when you read your sign ordinance or talk to the permit office.

How much does a lighted cabinet sign cost?

HomeAdvisor puts outdoor lighted signs at about $500 to $5,000 nationally. Large cabinets, freestanding structures, engineering and long electrical runs add to that. These are third-party estimates, not Suntronix pricing. Suntronix prices each custom project around the site, and financing may be available for qualifying projects.

Can I put a new face in my old sign cabinet?

Usually, if the cabinet, retainers, lighting and wiring are sound. The USSC model sign code treats a face change as allowed by right, but some cities require a permit or limit changes to nonconforming signs. Have the cabinet inspected before ordering a face, because a new face will not fix rust or failing lights.

Does a double-sided cabinet sign count twice toward sign area?

It depends on your code. The USSC model sign code counts only one side of a double-sided sign. Charleston, South Carolina's design review policy, by contrast, states one freestanding allowance as 35 square feet per face, or 70 square feet total if two-sided. Ask your zoning office how it counts back-to-back faces.

Should a sign face be polycarbonate or acrylic?

Polycarbonate when impact and vandalism are the bigger risk; acrylic when clarity and a scratch-resistant surface matter more. Lexan is a polycarbonate sold in sign grades. Suntronix offers a limited warranty on qualifying Lexan lighted sign faces; vandalism is excluded, and coverage is confirmed in the proposal.
