Auto Repair Shop Signs

Tell a driver with a problem what you fix, that you are open, and which door to pull up to.

The short answer

Auto repair shop signs have to work for a driver who needs help now. From the road, name the shop, say what you fix and show that you are open, in letters big enough to read at traffic speed. A pylon or pole sign with a full-color message center carries services, hours and specials; building and bay signs get the car to the right door.

Quick answers

Common questions.

What should an auto repair shop sign say?

The shop name, the kind of work you do and a way to tell you are open or reachable. That is usually three lines at most on the fixed sign. Individual services, specials and hours rotate on a message center, and department directions go on the building and bay doors.

How big should the letters be on auto shop signs?

It depends on road speed. Applying USSC rules of thumb, capital letters of about 12 inches suit a 30 mph two-lane road, about 22 inches a 45 mph arterial and 30 to 32 inches a 55 mph multi-lane road. Wall signs seen at an angle need letters about three times larger.

Can I put the ASE logo on my auto repair shop sign?

Ask ASE first. Certification marks belong to the organization that issues them, and the organization sets the terms for using its artwork. The same goes for AAA Approved Auto Repair and manufacturer marks. Most shops get more value from badges at the customer door than from small logos on a roadside sign.

Is an LED message center worth it for an auto repair shop?

It is if you will keep it current. A message center lets one sign carry a long service list, seasonal offers, inspection reminders, hours and hiring, which a fixed cabinet cannot. Check first that your zone allows one and how long each message must stay up.

Should an auto repair shop sign stay lit at night?

Usually yes, at least through evening pickup and any towing hours, so customers can find the lot and the key drop. Message centers should dim automatically at night; many codes and the International Sign Association use a limit of 0.3 footcandles above ambient light.

How much do auto repair shop signs cost?

National guides put outdoor lighted signs at $500 to $5,000, outdoor LED signs at $750 to $30,000 and pylon or pole signs at $20,000 to $100,000. These are third-party estimates. Suntronix has no published price list; each project is priced around the site, and financing may be available for qualifying projects.

Who handles permits and installation for an auto shop sign?

Suntronix provides the drawings and specifications a permit application needs. Permitting and installation can be coordinated for a fee, matched to an installer network, or handed to your preferred local installer with drawings and specifications. In the Quad Cities and surrounding three-hour market, Suntronix also does on-site surveys and installation coordination.
