Cedar Rapids sign company
Digital LED displays, lighted signs, channel letters, and monument and pylon signs for businesses in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding Corridor communities.
Corridor project focus
Suntronix designs, builds, and delivers business signs for Cedar Rapids and Corridor businesses. Every project starts with the property: how drivers approach it, where the sign first comes into view, what the building and the zone allow, and what customers need to notice before they reach the entrance.
A sign on Collins Road, part of the Highway 100 route around the metro, or on Edgewood Road near Blairs Ferry Road is read from multi-lane traffic, often by a driver already deciding which turn lane to take, so the name has to be large and the message short. A business that wants to be seen from I-380 has to be recognized from much farther away and at highway speed. On 1st Avenue in Cedar Rapids or along Marion's rebuilt 7th Avenue, customers arrive in slower, stop-and-go traffic with buildings closer to the street, where a wall sign, channel letters, or a compact monument can do more than a tall pole. The right format, size, and brightness follow from that site, not from a catalog.
Business sign systems
Start with what customers need to notice, from where, and when. Suntronix shapes the sign format around the site.

Illuminated cabinet and shaped signs that keep a Cedar Rapids business recognizable after dark through Iowa's long winter evenings.
Dimensional storefront letters for retail, restaurant, office, and multi-tenant plaza tenants, sized to the wall and to the occupancy frontage the city's building sign allowance is based on.
Monument, pylon, and pole signs planned around setback, sight lines, traffic speed, and the zone's height limit, which in Cedar Rapids ranges from 15 feet in urban and traditional districts to 45 feet in suburban mixed-use and industrial districts.
This is a plain-language summary of one city's rules, not legal advice. Cedar Rapids regulates signs in Section 32.04.08 of Chapter 32, the zoning ordinance, which the City publishes separately from the rest of its municipal code; the edition summarized here is marked effective February 28, 2026. What applies to a specific sign depends on the property's zone district and on whether the address is inside Cedar Rapids city limits at all. A property outside city limits follows a different code.
Permits: a sign permit is required to erect a sign or to convert any portion of one, including a conversion from non-digital to digital. Applications are accompanied by plans and specifications, and permanent signs that need a permit are installed by a contractor holding a Cedar Rapids Sign Contractor's Registration. Routine copy changes on a manual changeable copy sign or a digital display do not need a new permit.
Freestanding signs: in the suburban mixed-use and industrial districts (Table 32.04.08-3), a freestanding sign can reach up to 45 feet to the top of the sign structure. In the urban form and traditional districts (Table 32.04.08-2), freestanding signs are limited to 15 feet and pole signs are not permitted. In both tables, property-identification (Class A) sign area starts at 2 square feet per lineal foot of primary lot frontage, with a smaller allowance for a secondary frontage. Height is measured from the average ground level at the base of the sign, no sign may sit within 25 feet of an adjoining residential district on the same frontage, and replacing an existing legal pole sign with a monument or wall sign earns a 20 percent sign area bonus.
Digital and changeable message signs: the code defines a digital sign as any sign that uses electronic digital technology to convey a message, including LED displays, and permits digital signs in all zoning districts unless expressly prohibited. They must have automatic dimming that adjusts brightness to ambient light, the brightness settings must be supplied to the Building Official before the permit is issued, and the display must freeze in one position if it malfunctions. Digital signs may not flash, blink, flutter, or mimic traffic control devices or emergency vehicles. Full-motion video is a conditional use in the Suburban design area and is not permitted in other districts unless allowed as part of an approved PUD. The eight-second minimum message duration in Chapter 32 appears in the criteria for digital display billboard signs, so confirm with the City whether any hold time applies to an on-premises sign.
The City's Zoning Division in Development Services administers the sign code and can confirm a property's zone before design work goes too far. Suntronix provides the drawings and specifications a permit application needs.
