The best church sign sayings are short, warm and useful: one idea, roughly four to eight words, with the church name and the next service time close by. United States Sign Council research says signs with four to eight words in simple type can be read in about four seconds. Below are 60 original church sign messages grouped by season and occasion, followed by practical guidance for letter boards and LED message centers.
Every saying was written for this list and fits in eight words or fewer. Swap in your own dates and times.
How many words can a church sign hold?
Fewer than most people expect. The USSC’s legibility rules of thumb assume a sign carries six words, or about 30 letters, and estimate that a driver on a street under 35 mph has about eight seconds to notice, read and react. Its guideline standards add that drivers need 0.5 to 2.0 seconds per sign word, far slower than normal reading.
Letter size matters as much as word count. The USSC uses a rule-of-thumb legibility index of 30: one inch of capital letter height for every 30 feet of viewing distance. A driver at 30 mph covers about 44 feet per second (30 x 1.47). Over eight seconds that is roughly 350 feet, which works out to capital letters of about 12 inches. That is our calculation, not a code requirement. Use the viewing distance guide to run the numbers for your road.
- One idea per message. A service time and a seasonal greeting compete when they share a frame.
- Skip all caps for longer lines. The USSC says all-caps copy needs letters about 15 percent taller to read as well as mixed case.
- Leave empty space. The USSC recommends that negative space be no less than 60 percent of the sign or background area.

How do you write your own church sign messages?
- Lead with the useful part. “Easter 9 and 11” does more work than a clever line with no time.
- Use numerals and cut filler. “7 PM” reads faster than “seven o’clock.”
- Keep humor kind. Skip puns that need a second read or poke at another group.
- Change on a schedule. A message left up for weeks tells neighbors nobody is watching the sign.
Letter board or LED message center: which fits your church?
A changeable letter board, or reader board, works when the message changes every week or two and a volunteer can safely swap letters. An LED message center fits churches with several events a week or more than one service. HomeAdvisor’s national estimate for church signs is $5,000 to $50,000. It notes that marquees with static letters and simple backlighting sit at the low end, while a digital church sign can run up to $20,000 or higher. These are third-party national estimates, not Suntronix pricing.
A letter board means ladders, missing letters and messages limited to the letters you own. An LED display removes the ladder but needs someone responsible for content.
See the marquee and reader board sign page for letter board options and the digital LED sign page for display sizing. Suntronix digital signs are full-color LED message centers, and every digital sign order includes on-site training for the software, communication setup and scheduling. Train two volunteers at that session so the sign never depends on one person.
How long should each message stay on a church LED sign?
As long as your local code requires, and many churches sit in residential zones where hold times are longer. The USSC Model On-Premise Sign Code allows message centers on non-residential uses in residential zones by special exception only, with a minimum display time of 12 seconds. The USSC model code is a model some cities borrow from, not law.
| Code | Rule | What it means for content |
|---|---|---|
| USSC model code, residential zones | 12-second minimum display time; special exception required | A driver at 30 mph likely sees one frame. Make each frame complete. |
| Clemson, South Carolina (one city’s example) | Each message fixed for at least 15 seconds; no scrolling or animation | Plan static frames, not motion. |
| Panguitch, Utah (one city’s example) | Changes no more often than every 8 seconds; no animation or scrolling | Short sayings fit well in a single frame. |
| Spokane, Washington (one city’s example) | Institutional uses in residential zones: half the allowed sign size; off 10 pm to 6 am | Schedule evening events before 10 pm. |
Put the math together. If a driver has about eight seconds of viewing time and your code requires a 12-second hold, most drivers see a single message, not a sequence. Put the church name or the service time in every frame, and never split a sentence across two frames.
Night brightness matters in residential zones too. The International Sign Association recommends that message centers not exceed 0.3 footcandles over ambient light, measured at a distance based on sign size. USSC Foundation lighting guidance says message centers should be dimmed at night to only 2 to 8 percent of daytime brightness. The church signs page covers zoning and night hours in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
What are good church sign sayings for visitors?
Keep them short and specific: “New here? We saved you a seat” or “Come as you are. Coffee is on.” Pair a welcome with a practical detail, such as the service time or which door to use. A first-time guest needs to know when to come and where to go more than they need a clever line.
How many words should a church sign message have?
Aim for four to eight. USSC guideline standards say signs with four to eight words in simple type can be read in about four seconds. Its rules of thumb also assume about six words, or 30 letters, for a typical sign. Longer messages force smaller letters, and drivers simply miss them.
Are funny church sign sayings a good idea?
Gentle humor can work if it is kind and easy to get at a glance. Avoid puns that need a second read, jokes about other faiths or groups, and anything a neighbor could take as a jab. When in doubt, choose warm over clever.
Can a church put an LED sign in a residential zone?
Sometimes, with conditions. The USSC model code allows message centers on non-residential uses in residential zones only by special exception, with a 12-second minimum hold. Cities often add size limits and night shutoff hours. Ask your planning office before you design the sign.
