Restaurant Signs

Get the turn from the road, then get guests to the right door or lane.

The short answer

A restaurant sign works at two distances: from the road, where drivers decide to turn in, and on the lot, where they find the entrance or drive-through lane. A lighted cabinet or channel letters carry the name. A message center handles daypart specials, hours and hiring, where the code allows it.

Quick answers

Common questions.

What type of sign is best for a restaurant?

It depends on the road and the building. A lighted cabinet on a pole or monument works for roadside identity; channel letters suit a storefront or pad building; a message center helps if specials change often. Pairing roadside identity with building letters covers both distances.

Can I put my menu on an outdoor LED sign?

You can promote items, but keep it to one item per frame so it reads at distance. If you are part of a chain with 20 or more locations, FDA menu labeling rules require calories on menus and menu boards; check with your brand before displaying standard menu items.

How often should a restaurant change its sign messages?

As often as the offers change, usually by daypart. Local hold-time rules set the minimum time each message stays up: 15 seconds on multi-business signs in Clemson, South Carolina, and 2 seconds in Spokane, Washington. Remove expired offers the same day.

Do I need a permit to replace a restaurant sign face?

Often. Some cities require a permit for any alteration or replacement of a sign; Panguitch, Utah is one example. Ask your local permit office before ordering, because a face swap on an older nonconforming sign can raise other questions.

How much does a restaurant sign cost?

National guides put outdoor lighted signs at $500 to $5,000, channel letters at $2,000 to $20,000 or more, and outdoor LED signs at $750 to $30,000. These third-party ranges vary with size and site; Suntronix prices each project around the actual location.
