What to Know Before Ordering Channel Letters

Key decisions for dimensional storefront letters, including lighting, mounting, scale, and building context.

Letter-set anatomy

The visible letter is only the front of the decision.

  1. 01Readable face and return depth
  2. 02Wall material and mounting path
  3. 03Power, service, and access

A useful channel-letter plan resolves the sign face, the wall, the mounting path, and service access together.

Channel letters turn a business name or logo into dimensional building signage. They can be illuminated or non-illuminated and configured for storefronts, plazas, offices, restaurants, and other commercial buildings. The visible letter style is only one part of the project; the wall, power, mounting method, landlord requirements, and viewing distance are equally important.

Start with the building

Photograph the full facade from the customer approach, not only the empty sign band. Note the wall material, architectural lines, available mounting area, electrical access, working height, neighboring tenants, and anything that could block the view.

A letter set should feel proportionate to the building and remain readable from the parking lot, road, or sidewalk. The artwork proof may look balanced on a screen while the same letters feel undersized on the actual facade. Accurate field dimensions help prevent that mismatch.

Decide how the letters should light

Front-lit letters illuminate through the face. Reverse-lit or halo-lit letters cast light onto the wall behind them. Some identities use a combination, while other sites call for non-illuminated dimensional letters.

The wall color and texture affect halo lighting. Face color, return depth, LED placement, power supplies, and nighttime contrast affect front illumination. The right method depends on the brand, architecture, local rules, landlord criteria, service access, and desired nighttime presence.

Understand mounting and electrical conditions

Letters may mount individually or use a raceway or other support system, depending on the wall, wiring path, landlord requirements, and installer plan. Power location, disconnects, penetration details, attachment points, interior access, and future service should be resolved before production.

A site survey and installation review documents the conditions the fabricator and installer need. If another installer will complete the work, the proposal should clearly describe what information and components Suntronix will supply.

Prepare usable artwork

Vector logo files are best because they can be scaled without losing edge quality. If vector files are unavailable, provide the cleanest original artwork, brand standards, approved colors, and examples showing how the identity should be used.

Not every fine detail translates well to fabricated letters. Very thin strokes, tight spacing, small taglines, and intricate shapes may need adjustment so the sign remains buildable and readable. Those changes should protect the character of the identity while respecting physical limitations.

Information to collect before requesting a quote

  • Project address and property contact
  • Wide and close photographs of the facade
  • Approximate wall and sign-band dimensions
  • Vector logo or clean brand artwork
  • Landlord or property sign criteria
  • Known electrical conditions
  • Target timing and installer preference

Use relevant work as a reference

The Ranch Plaza Dental Group case study illustrates how spacing, hierarchy, logo elements, and building context come together in a dimensional storefront identity. Use completed work to discuss what feels appropriate for your property rather than to request a direct copy.

Explore the full channel-letter service, then share the site information when you request a project quote. A useful first conversation should connect the brand to the actual wall, viewing distance, installation path, and budget.
